Our story

Behind Mountain Farm Retreat, there is a man and its family: Michael, your host. When we started our journey on this mountain, it was just forest. It took us almost 10 years to prepare the land and start building the accomodations on it. For a few years, we even slept on a bus on the property to be able to stay here and make the works required to live here full time!

The entire family grew up on this mountain, so it was really important for us to carry this legacy. The property’s name is Tjuringa, wich means “sacred stone” in Arrernte. We always tought that the area had a secret energy, that it was a significant and special place, and we wanted to be able to share its beauty with people.

That is what motivated us to start Mountain Farm Retreat, so that you too can enjoy a retreat in a truly preserved space just a few hours away from Melbourne!

The property is in our family since 1981. At first, it was just forest. It took almost 10 years to just make space to be able to build The Big House and The Cottage.

1981

In the beginning, The Cottage was just an uninhabitable building that was already on the property. But in 2018, we renovated it and started to rent it.

The Big House was built in 2007. We actually lived in this house for a few years before moving out!

The Farm today

Mountain Farm Retreat is a perfect alliance of farm stay experience in a luxury setting

Today, Moutain Farm Retreat offers two renovated accommodations (The Cottage and The Big House), so that you too can enjoy this little piece of paradise. We wanted you to be able to explore our working farm and its beautiful surroundings, while living in a self-contained accomodation, so you can reconnect with nature and discover the coutry life in a luxury setting. You will be able to relax and unwind at the pace of nature, or you can also take advantage of all the Activities and the Attractions the region has to offer thanks to our proximity to Healesvillle and our location in the Yarra Valley.

The Farm is home to a lot of animals, including chickens, cows, and a sheep. Our chickens produce free-range eggs that you can collect during your stay with us. A lot of wild animals can be seen on the Farm, including kangaroos during summer, wallabies, wombats, and an array of native birds.

A green property

Ecology has always been a top priority for us, that’s why we tend to self-sufficiency since the beginning of our journey. All of the water used to sustain the Farm comes directly from a spring (that you can access after a short walk from the accomodations), and the electricity comes primarly from our solar pannels. For heating, you can use our fireplace (with firewood provided for your stay). It’s one of our prority to keep our footprint as low as possible.

Composting and recycling is common practice here, we ask you to please keep doing it during your stay.

We want to keep the forest in its natural state in order to preserve the wild animals that live there, and the integrity of the area, allowing bushland to regenerate without any disruption.
